Eligibility at a glance: Over 30 days old and up to age 29 · Trips up to 365 days (coverage cannot exceed 12 consecutive months for any one trip) · Trip must originate and terminate in Canada · Must be purchased before you depart your province or territory of residence · Requires a valid Canadian government health insurance plan.
How it pays: Benefits are coordinated with any other insurance or prepaid plan you hold, so total reimbursement from all sources does not exceed 100% of eligible expenses. Coverage and benefits cease immediately once you arrive back in your home province or territory.

Who This Plan is For
The Manulife Global Youth Emergency Medical Policy is purpose-built for young Canadian residents — up to age 29 — who maintain valid provincial or territorial government health coverage and are traveling outside their home province, whether for a few days or up to a full year. It covers the sudden, unexpected medical emergencies that a Canadian government health plan often won't fully cover once you leave your province.
This plan is an excellent fit for:
- Young athletes and hockey players traveling for tournaments, camps, showcases, and competition
- Students traveling or studying outside their home province
- Young Canadians on gap-year, seasonal work, or extended travel
- Youth traveling with family, teams, or groups
- Anyone under 30 needing affordable emergency medical coverage away from home
Eligibility notes:
- Available to Canadian residents over 30 days old and up to age 29
- You must maintain a valid Canadian government health insurance plan for the entire duration of your trip — otherwise reimbursement is capped at $25,000
- Your trip must originate and terminate in Canada
- Coverage must be purchased before you depart your province or territory of residence
- Trips of up to 365 days (coverage cannot exceed 12 consecutive months)
- Pre-existing conditions are subject to a 3-month stability lookback before your effective date (see Tab 6)
- Coverage can be arranged as a Top-Up to another plan for longer trips, and extended (subject to premium) as long as total trip length stays within 365 days
Hockey Players
If your player is registered with USA Hockey, they already have some accident coverage during sanctioned or approved events. But that program is built to sit on top of other insurance — and it works better, and costs your family less, when a plan like this one is in place. Here's how the pieces fit.
What the USA Hockey Accident plan covers:
- Excess accident medical — up to $50,000 (includes limited dental). It pays after your other insurance, and only for injuries at sanctioned events.
- Catastrophic injury medical — up to $2,000,000, with a $50,000 deductible that's usually absorbed by your other coverage and the excess medical plan.
- The deductible depends on whether you carry other insurance:
- With a primary plan in place — $1,000 out-of-pocket per accident.
- With no primary plan — $3,500 deductible, because USA Hockey then has to act as the primary payer.
What the Manulife Global Youth Emergency plan adds (for Canadian players visiting the U.S.):
- Up to $1,000,000 in emergency medical for the whole trip — not just hockey injuries, but any sudden illness or accident while your player is away from home.
- It counts as the "primary" coverage USA Hockey looks for, keeping your out-of-pocket at the $1,000 level instead of $3,500.
- Up to $1,000,000 for emergency evacuation and return to Canada, plus accidental dental up to $1,000,000.
- Coverage USA Hockey doesn't provide — off-ice illness, emergencies away from sanctioned events, and other travel medical needs.
Put simply: this plan handles the broad, everyday emergency medical; USA Hockey's excess and catastrophic layers handle the serious on-ice injuries; and having a primary plan in place keeps your deductible at the lower $1,000.
What this plan does not cover — please read before buying:
- Paid play. Injuries from any hockey a player is paid to play are excluded. Amateur and minor hockey are covered; if your player receives compensation, call us about the right plan.
- Pre-existing conditions that weren't stable in the 3 months before the effective date.
- The $25,000 cap. Reimbursement is limited to $25,000 if your player isn't covered by a Canadian provincial or territorial health plan for the entire trip — keep that health card active.
- Non-emergency, follow-up, and rehab care. This is emergency coverage; ongoing physiotherapy or rehab after you're home is limited or excluded.
If something happens on the road: call the Assistance Centre before treatment — 1-877-251-4517 (toll-free, U.S. & Canada). Skipping that call leaves your player responsible for 25% of the bill.
Coverage Options & Top-Ups
(This plan does not carry traditional add-on riders. Instead of "optional upgrades," this tab covers the ways coverage can be extended or stepped up — see the note to Kristen in the flags section.)
- Top-Up Coverage — Purchase this plan before departure to add to insurance you already hold from another source for a portion of your trip. It's your responsibility to confirm a Top-Up is permitted on your existing plan with no gap in coverage.
- Coverage Extensions — If you're already traveling, call the Assistance Centre before your expiry date to extend, subject to an additional premium, as long as total trip length does not exceed 365 days. If you have not had (or don't expect) a medical condition or claim since the policy was issued, the extension is issued right away; otherwise it's subject to Assistance Centre approval.
- Step Up to Higher Limits — Travelers who want more than $1,000,000 in emergency medical coverage can consider the regular Emergency Medical Plan, which covers up to $5,000,000 for emergency medical expenses. Ask about eligibility.

Plan Details, Conditions & Exclusions
Pre-Existing Conditions: This insurance does not cover a pre-existing or related medical condition that was not stable during the 3-month period before your effective date. A condition is "stable" when there have been no new or changed treatments or medications, no worsening, no new or more frequent symptoms, no hospitalization or specialist referral, and no pending tests or treatment. It also excludes any condition you knew (or reasonably should have expected) would require treatment during your trip.
Key conditions & limitations:
- You must call the Assistance Centre before treatment or hospital admission (or within 24 hours of a life/organ-threatening emergency) or you pay 25% of covered expenses.
- After treatment begins, the Assistance Centre must assess and pre-approve additional treatment, tests, or surgery, or the claim may not be paid.
- The Assistance Centre may return you to Canada for treatment if you are medically able to travel; declining a medically supported transfer ends coverage.
- $25,000 maximum if you are not covered by a government health plan for the entire trip.
Notable exclusions include: non-emergency, experimental, or elective treatment · treatment that can reasonably wait until you return to Canada · transplants · trips taken to obtain treatment · replenishing maintenance medications · preventive medicines, inoculations, birth control, and OTC drugs · pregnancy/delivery within 9 weeks of the due date and any child born on the trip · self-inflicted injuries (unless linked to a mental health illness) · minor mental or emotional disorders · conditions related to chronic use or abuse of alcohol, drugs, or intoxicants · criminal or illegal acts · fraud or misstatement · conditions arising after a Government of Canada "Avoid all travel" / "Avoid non-essential travel" advisory (unrelated emergencies still covered).
High-risk activity exclusions: No coverage for injuries sustained while participating in any sporting activity for which you are paid, or in BASE jumping/wingsuit flying, hang-gliding, spelunking, hunting, bungee jumping, piloting an aircraft, rock climbing, technical mountain-climbing (using specialized equipment), scuba diving without an open-water certificate, motorcycling without a valid Canadian motorcycle licence, mopeds without a valid Canadian driver's licence, or motor-vehicle competition/speed events.
Act of Terrorism Coverage: Where an act of terrorism causes an otherwise-covered loss, benefits are payable up to an aggregate of $35,000,000 CDN per act (up to two acts per calendar year), on an excess basis. Losses caused by biological, chemical, nuclear, or radioactive means are excluded.
