Who This Plan is For
The Student Health Advantage plan is built specifically for non-U.S. students, scholars, and cultural exchange participants who are living and studying outside their home country. It goes beyond standard travel medical coverage to address the unique, longer-term healthcare needs of students — including sports injuries, mental health, and continuous care across an academic year.
This plan is an excellent fit for:
- International students enrolled at U.S. colleges and universities
- Scholars, researchers, and visiting faculty at U.S. institutions
- J1, J2, F1, and related visa holders requiring compliant health coverage
- Students participating in long-term study abroad or cultural exchange programs
- Dependents (spouses and children) accompanying the student
- Educational institutions and universities seeking a compliant group student health plan
- Students involved in organized sports or intramural athletics
Visa compliance: The Student Health Advantage plan is designed to meet U.S. student, scholar, and cultural exchange program visa insurance requirements, including J1, J2, and F1 visa holders. Confirm specific visa requirements with your school's international student office.
Why Student Health Advantage vs. Patriot Exchange Program: Both plans target the international student market, but Student Health Advantage offers several meaningful upgrades: a significantly higher Emergency Reunion benefit ($50,000 vs. $15,000), a higher Return of Mortal Remains benefit ($50,000 vs. $25,000), differentiated AD&D for the student vs. dependents, built-in Personal Liability coverage, and the fixed $250 deductible structure. It is also the plan most commonly required by U.S. universities for compliance with school health insurance mandates.
Eligibility notes:
- Available to individuals and groups; group plans include Telehealth at no additional cost
- Coverage is available for spouses and unmarried, dependent children
- Maximum period of coverage: 365 days; annually-renewable group long-term plans available
- Area of coverage: worldwide excluding the insured person's country of residence
- Pre-existing conditions excluded until 12 months of continuous coverage is maintained (36-month lookback period)
- Underwritten by SiriusPoint Specialty Insurance Corporation
- Pre-certification required for certain services; failure to pre-certify results in a 50% reduction of eligible expenses; Interfacility Ambulance Transfer and Emergency Medical Evacuation have no coverage without pre-certification
Optional Upgrades
Mobile Device Protection Rider (Individual Plans Only)
Covers repair or replacement of your cell phone if it is lost, stolen, or accidentally damaged during your studies abroad. Keeps you connected throughout your academic program without the worry of being without your device.
Note: No additional riders beyond Mobile Device Protection are listed for individual plans in the current Certificate of Insurance. Group plans may have additional customizable options — contact us for group plan details.

14-Day Free Look Period
The Student Health Advantage plan includes a free look period — if you are not completely satisfied with your coverage, you may request cancellation and a full refund of premium provided no claims have been filed.
Free Look / Cancellation: The insured person may request cancellation of the Certificate and a refund of premium if not completely satisfied, provided the request is made before any claims have been submitted. A 10-day grace period applies to renewal premium payments — if premium is unpaid at the end of the grace period, coverage lapses from the initial due date. Contact IMG directly to initiate a cancellation request.
In plain terms:
- You may cancel for a full refund before any claims are filed, provided you act promptly after receiving your policy documents
- Once a claim has been submitted, the premium is considered earned for the coverage period
- A 10-day grace period applies to renewal premiums — coverage terminates from the original due date if unpaid, not the end of the grace period
- For renewals: a new pre-existing condition exclusion period may apply
