Who This Plan is For
The Diplomat Long Term plan is built for anyone spending an extended period of time outside their home country — whether for work, study, service, or adventure. Its flexible 3–36 month structure and renewable design make it equally suited for a gap-year traveler and a long-term expatriate.
This plan is an excellent fit for:
- Expatriates and long-term international residents who need a dependable medical safety net while living abroad
- Business travelers whose U.S. health insurance offers limited or no overseas coverage
- Study abroad students and exchange program participants requiring compliant international medical coverage
- Mission, church, and volunteer workers traveling internationally for extended service assignments
- International adventure travelers seeking coverage for extended treks, safaris, and other activities (with optional Hazardous Activity Rider)
- Non-U.S. citizens visiting the United States who need medical coverage not provided by their home country's national health scheme
- Families traveling together — covers a second adult and unmarried dependent children; children may also be covered when traveling alone
Why your existing coverage may not be enough:
Most U.S. group and individual health plans provide limited or no coverage outside the United States. PPO networks do not extend internationally, leaving the insured responsible for any billing differences. Medicare provides no coverage outside the U.S. For non-U.S. citizens, national health plans rarely cover medical care sustained abroad — and hospitals in the U.S. may not recognize a foreign insurance card or government health plan.
Eligibility notes:
- Available to individuals from most countries; coverage is not available for travel to Afghanistan, Cuba, Iran, Nepal, or Palestinian Territories
- Coverage is not available for residents of Australia or Iran
- U.S. resident coverage is limited to residents of: AK, AZ, CA, CO, CT, IN, MS, NH, NV, NE, PA, SC, UT, VA, WI, and WY
- Coverage is available for individuals ages 14 days and older
- Maximum coverage period: 36 continuous months (ages 14 days–69); 24 months (ages 70–79); 12 months (ages 80+)
