Who This Plan is For
The Diplomat International plan is built for U.S. residents heading out on a trip — whether across the border for a long weekend or abroad for six months. It covers both domestic and international travel, making it a flexible option for a wide range of travelers.
This plan is a strong fit for:
- U.S. residents traveling inside or outside the United States for 5 to 180 days
- Business travelers whose employer health plan offers limited out-of-network or international coverage
- Leisure travelers taking domestic or international trips
- Students studying abroad
- Employees traveling internationally on behalf of their company
- Families traveling together who want medical and evacuation coverage on a single policy
- Travelers seeking search and rescue protection for outdoor and adventure activities
Why your existing coverage may fall short:
Most U.S. health insurance plans — including employer-sponsored group plans and individual marketplace plans — offer limited coverage outside their provider network, and virtually none cover emergency medical air evacuation. Medicare provides no coverage outside the U.S. The Diplomat International fills those gaps with dedicated emergency medical, evacuation, and non-medical evacuation coverage, purpose-built for travel.
Important eligibility notes:
- Available to permanent U.S. residents only (residents of U.S. Territories are not eligible)
- Coverage is not available for travel to: Afghanistan, Belarus, Iran, Libya, Nepal, North Korea, Palestinian Territories, Russia, Syria, or Yemen
- This plan cannot be purchased after departure — must be purchased before leaving your home residence
- Coverage is not renewable — a new policy must be purchased for each trip
- Certain benefits have state-specific restrictions; see the Schedule of Benefits for your state
Optional Upgrades
Expand your coverage with add-ons for specific sports activities or higher AD&D limits.
Adventure Sports
Extends medical coverage to injuries sustained while participating in non-professional, non-competitive recreational sports activities. Coverage applies up to the full policy medical maximum.
Covered activities include (but are not limited to): cycling, fishing, swimming, scuba diving (certified divers ≤60 ft; uncertified divers ≤30 ft), snorkeling, white/black water rafting Grades 1–3, canoeing, kayaking, zip-lining, water skiing, camping, hiking, backpacking, sailing, boating, downhill and cross-country skiing, snowboarding, snowmobiling, sledding/tobogganing, snow tubing, ice skating, and resort-sponsored activities.
Adventure Sports does not include Bodily Contact Sports, Extreme Sports, Interscholastic Sports, Organized Sports, or Mountaineering.
Bodily Contact, Interscholastic & Organized Sports
Extends medical coverage to injuries from competitive team sports involving direct physical contact, school-sponsored athletic competition, or intramural/recreational organized sports. Medical benefits limited to $25,000 per covered loss.
- Bodily Contact Sports include: football, soccer, baseball, wrestling, ice hockey, rugby, and lacrosse
- Interscholastic Sports — competition between accredited educational institutions, under direct supervision of a school employee, including practice and supervised travel to/from events
- Organized Sports — intramural and recreational sports leagues
Extreme Sports
Extends medical coverage to injuries from high-risk activities that risk loss of life or limb even when performed by skilled participants. Medical benefits limited to $25,000 per covered loss.
Covered activities include (but are not limited to): skydiving, BASE jumping, hang gliding, parachuting, bungee jumping, caving, rappelling, spelunking, white/black water rafting above Grade 3, off-trail or helicopter-accessed skiing/snowboarding, mountaineering, rock climbing, high-altitude activities, personal combat/fighting sports, rodeo, motorsport racing, free diving, and scuba diving below 60 feet or without a dive master.
Common Carrier AD&D
Provides additional Accidental Death & Dismemberment coverage specifically for losses occurring while riding as a fare-paying passenger on a licensed transportation vehicle (aircraft, train, bus, ship, etc.) during your trip. Loss must occur within 180 days of the accident.
Principal Sum options: $100,000 / $250,000 / $500,000
Covers the same table of losses as base AD&D, plus speech, hearing in both ears, and thumb/index finger of the same hand. Exposure and disappearance provisions included.
Travel Assistance Services
The Diplomat International plan includes 24/7 worldwide travel assistance services, coordinated through the plan's authorized Travel Assistance Company. This is a companion service included with your coverage — not a separate insurance benefit.
What assistance services include:
- Coordination and pre-authorization of Emergency Medical Evacuation and Repatriation
- Verification and arrangement of Hospital Companion transportation
- Coordination of Non-Medical Emergency Transportation (Natural Disaster, Security, Political situations)
- Return of unattended minor children to their home in the event of hospitalization or death
- Location of local hospitals, clinics, and medical facilities worldwide
- U.S. Board Certified Physicians on staff around the clock
- Multilingual personnel available 24/7
- Help navigating emergency situations abroad
Important: All evacuation and repatriation services must be pre-authorized and arranged by the authorized Travel Assistance Company. Services arranged independently may not be covered; however, in cases where the Travel Assistance Company was not contacted, the Company may, at its sole discretion, provide limited reimbursement for the portion of expenses it determines would have been authorized.
