Should I Include Taxes and Fees in My Insured Trip Cost?
When purchasing travel insurance, one question we hear often is: "Do I insure just the base price of my trip, or do I include taxes and fees too?" The most important takeaway: if taxes and mandatory fees are prepaid and non-refundable, they are generally included as part of your insured trip cost. The goal is to insure the amount of money you could actually lose if you had to cancel your trip for a covered reason.
What Should Be Included?
Your insured trip cost generally includes all prepaid, non-refundable travel expenses, including mandatory taxes and fees that are part of your trip purchase.
These may include:
- Airfare
- Cruise fare
- Hotel costs
- Resort fees
- Government taxes
- Airline taxes and fees
- Port charges
- Tour packages
- Excursions
- Airport transfers
If you've already paid for it and you won't get your money back if you cancel, it generally belongs in your insured trip cost.
A Real-World Example
A couple books a seven-night Alaska cruise.
Their reservation includes:
- Cruise Fare: $5,600
- Port Charges & Government Fees: $520
- Taxes: $280
Their total prepaid, non-refundable trip cost is $6,400 before adding airfare and shore excursions.
When purchasing travel insurance, they insure the entire prepaid, non-refundable amount, including the taxes and mandatory fees.
Doing so helps ensure their policy accurately reflects the amount they've invested in the trip.
Expenses Often Included vs. Not Included
| Generally Included* | May Not Need to Be Included* |
|---|---|
| Cruise Fare | Refundable deposits |
| Airfare | Refundable airfare |
| Hotel Costs | Expenses paid after arrival |
| Mandatory Taxes | Meals purchased during the trip |
| Port Charges | Souvenirs |
| Resort Fees | Optional spending money |
| Guided Tours | Future purchases not yet booked |
*Always review your policy and supplier cancellation terms.
💡 ICI Traveler Tip
Think about it this way: If you had to cancel your trip tomorrow, what prepaid expenses would you actually lose? Those are typically the costs you should discuss with your travel insurance advisor when determining your insured trip cost.
What About Optional Purchases?
Not every expense belongs in your insured trip cost.
For example, you may not need to include:
- Meals you plan to buy during your trip
- Shopping money
- Entertainment you haven't booked yet
- Other expenses that are refundable or haven't been prepaid
Your goal is to insure your actual financial investment—not your vacation budget.
If You're Unsure, AskTravel reservations often include several different charges, and it isn't always obvious which ones are refundable.
If you're unsure whether taxes, fees, excursions, or other expenses should be included, we're happy to help you review your trip details before you purchase your policy.
It's much easier to determine the correct insured amount before your trip than after you need to file a claim.
