How to Compare Mission Trip Insurance Plans: A Guide for Churches & Mission Organizations

Choosing mission trip insurance isn't just about finding the lowest price. The right plan depends on where your team is traveling, how long you'll be gone, what you'll be doing, and what protection your travelers may need if something unexpected happens.

Compare the actual benefits, limits, exclusions, assistance services, and enrollment process - not just the premium.

What Should You Compare?

Compare What to Look For
Emergency Medical Coverage Review the medical benefit limit and what eligible illnesses or injuries may be covered while traveling.
Medical Evacuation Check the evacuation benefit limit, when evacuation may be covered, and whether assistance-provider coordination is required.
Trip Cancellation & Interruption Determine whether you need protection before departure, after departure, or both. Not every plan includes trip cancellation.
Destination & Trip Length Confirm the plan is available for your destination and covers the entire length of your trip.
Mission Activities Consider the work your team will be doing and review the policy for exclusions or limitations that could affect those activities.
Group Enrollment For mission teams, look at how travelers are enrolled, whether rosters can be uploaded, and how documents are distributed.
24/7 Assistance Find out what help is available during an emergency and how travelers contact the assistance provider from abroad.
Benefit Limits & Exclusions Read beyond the benefit names. Compare limits, covered reasons, eligibility requirements, exclusions, and policy definitions.

Don't Assume Every Mission Plan Is the Same

Two plans can both advertise "mission trip insurance" while providing very different benefits.

For example, one plan may focus primarily on post-departure medical and travel emergencies, while another may also provide trip cancellation coverage before departure.

That distinction matters if your church has prepaid airfare, lodging, tours, or other non-refundable trip expenses.

Likewise, seeing "medical evacuation" on a benefit list isn't enough. Compare the benefit amount, circumstances in which evacuation may be covered, and any requirements for coordinating transportation.

Think About Your Team, Not Just the Trip

A plan that works well for one mission team may not be the best fit for another.

Before comparing options, gather a few basics:

  • Where is your team traveling?
  • How many people are going?
  • How long will they be away?
  • What activities are planned?
  • What are the travelers' ages?
  • How much has each traveler prepaid?
  • Do you need trip cancellation protection before departure?
  • Are there any special medical, destination, or itinerary considerations?

Having this information ready makes comparing plans much easier.

Consider the Enrollment Process, Too

Coverage matters most, but administration matters when you're responsible for an entire team.

Ask whether you can enroll travelers as a group, upload a roster, make changes when team members change, quickly access insurance documents, and get help when you have questions.

For a mission leader coordinating dozens of travelers, a simple enrollment process and responsive support can make a meaningful difference.

Price Matters - But It Shouldn't Be the Only Factor

Affordable coverage is important, especially for churches and nonprofit organizations working within a budget.

But the least expensive plan isn't necessarily the best value.

Compare what you're receiving for the premium and pay particular attention to the benefits most important to your trip. A lower-cost plan may be appropriate for one team, while another may need broader protection.
