Can I Still Buy Insurance If My Trip Is Soon?

Yes, you can usually buy travel insurance even if your departure is right around the corner. The key is knowing the deadlines for each type of coverage.

General Rule
You can purchase most travel insurance up until the day before your departure date.

  • Example: If your trip starts October 1, you can still buy insurance on September 30.

  • Once you depart, you can no longer purchase coverage that includes trip cancellation.

Medical-Only Coverage
If you only need emergency medical and evacuation benefits:

  • You can purchase medical-only plans even after you’ve departed.

  • This option works well for travelers who forgot to insure their trip cost but still want protection abroad.

Cancellation Coverage
If you want your trip cost protected, timing matters:

  • You must buy before you leave home.

  • Insurance only reimburses non-refundable, prepaid expenses if purchased in advance.

Special Time-Sensitive Benefits
Some benefits have stricter windows:

  • Pre-Existing Condition Waiver: Must buy within 20 days of your first trip deposit (varies by plan).

  • Cancel For Any Reason (CFAR): Must be purchased within 21 days of your first trip deposit.

Miss those deadlines? You can still buy insurance, but those optional benefits won’t apply.
