Can I Buy Travel Insurance After My Trip Has Already Started?

It's one of the most common questions we receive from travelers already on the road: "I forgot to buy travel insurance before I left. Is it too late?" The most important takeaway: for most travelers, it's too late to purchase a comprehensive travel insurance policy once your trip has begun. However, there are a few specialized post-departure travel medical plans that may still be available, depending on your situation. These plans are different from traditional trip cancellation insurance and are designed to help protect you while you're already traveling.

Why Most Plans Aren't Available
Comprehensive travel insurance is designed to protect your trip before it begins.

Once you've departed:

  • Trip cancellation coverage is generally no longer available.

  • Time-sensitive benefits have expired.

  • Existing events can't be insured.

That's why purchasing your policy before departure is always the best option.
