For most travelers, the answer is no. Comprehensive travel insurance plans generally must be purchased before your trip begins. While some limited medical-only plans may exist through certain providers, the broad travel protection most travelers expect—including trip cancellation—is typically only available before departure.

Can I Buy Travel Insurance After I've Already Left for My Trip?

It's a question we hear from time to time: "I'm already traveling. Can I still buy travel insurance?" The most important takeaway: for most travelers, once your trip has begun, it's too late to purchase the comprehensive travel insurance coverage most people are looking for. That's why we strongly recommend purchasing travel insurance before you leave home—ideally soon after making your initial trip deposit, but no later than the day before your departure.

Why Timing Matters

Travel insurance is designed to protect your trip before unexpected events happen.

Once you've already started traveling:

  • Your trip has already begun.
  • Trip cancellation is no longer available.
  • Certain time-sensitive benefits are no longer available.
  • Coverage options become much more limited.

Waiting until you're already on vacation may leave you without the protection you expected.

Because plan availability and customer support may be limited outside normal business hours, we recommend purchasing your travel insurance at least a few days before departure whenever possible rather than waiting until the last minute.

A Real-World Example

A family flies to Italy for a two-week vacation.

Three days into the trip, the father realizes they never purchased travel insurance.

Concerned about traveling without coverage, he contacts ICI Traveler hoping to purchase a policy.

Unfortunately, because the trip has already begun, the comprehensive travel insurance plans they were interested in—including trip cancellation, trip interruption, baggage protection, and other travel benefits—are no longer available.

Although some providers may offer limited travel medical plans in certain situations, those options are often very different from the comprehensive protection travelers expect and may include waiting periods or eligibility restrictions.

The family wishes they had spent just a few minutes purchasing coverage before leaving home.

Why We Recommend Purchasing Early

Buying your policy before departure gives you access to the broadest range of benefits available under your selected plan.

Depending on the policy, purchasing early may also help you qualify for important time-sensitive benefits, including:

  • Pre-Existing Condition Waivers
  • Optional Cancel For Any Reason (CFAR) coverage
  • Optional Interrupt For Any Reason (IFAR) coverage
  • Protection for your prepaid travel investment from the beginning of your planning process

The earlier you purchase, the more options you generally have.

Purchase Timing What It May Mean
Shortly after your initial trip deposit May provide access to the greatest number of available benefits, depending on the policy.
Before your departure date Comprehensive travel insurance is generally still available.
After your trip has already begun Comprehensive travel insurance is generally no longer available, and any remaining options may be limited.

Coverage varies by provider and policy.

💡 ICI Traveler Tip
Don't wait until you're packed—or already at the airport—to think about travel insurance. Purchasing your policy early gives you time to review your coverage, ask questions, and make sure you're protected before your journey begins.

While many plans can be purchased up until the day before you leave, we encourage travelers not to wait.

Buying earlier gives you:

  • More time to review your policy.
  • Time to ask questions.
  • Access to time-sensitive benefits that may require early purchase.
  • Peace of mind knowing your trip is already protected.

If you wait until the day you depart, our office may not be available to answer questions or help you choose the plan that's right for your trip.
