Can I Add Trip Cancellation Insurance for a New Trip While I'm Already Traveling?

Why Isn't Trip Cancellation Available?
Trip cancellation insurance is designed to protect trips before they begin.
Once you're already traveling, insurers generally don't offer new trip cancellation coverage for additional vacations that are booked during your current trip.

A Real-World Example
A traveler books a 14-day Caribbean cruise and purchases comprehensive travel insurance before leaving home.
Halfway through the cruise, she's having such a wonderful experience that she decides to extend her vacation by booking a second, back-to-back Mediterranean cruise departing just a few days later. The new cruise costs nearly $14,000.
Before paying for the second cruise, she contacts her travel insurance advisor to see if she can simply add the new cruise to her existing policy or purchase trip cancellation coverage for the additional vacation.
Unfortunately, because her original trip had already begun, there was no travel insurance plan available that could provide trip cancellation coverage for the newly booked cruise. While certain post-departure travel medical plans could still provide emergency medical coverage for the remainder of her travels, they could not insure the cost of the new cruise itself.
A few days before the second cruise was scheduled to depart, she became seriously ill and her physician determined she was not medically able to travel.
Because the second cruise had been booked after her original trip had already started, she was unable to recover the prepaid, non-refundable cost of the new cruise through travel insurance.
This situation highlights why it's important to finalize your travel plans—and purchase travel insurance—before your journey begins whenever possible.
